What is RLE?
Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE), also called Clear Lens Extraction, is a procedure in which the eye's natural lens is replaced with an advanced intraocular lens (IOL) — even before a cataract has formed. It is essentially cataract surgery performed for refractive correction.
RLE may be suited to patients over 40 with high myopia, hyperopia, or early presbyopia who are not candidates for LASIK or ICL. Because the natural lens is replaced, cataract is not expected to develop in that eye later. Dependence on glasses after surgery varies by individual.
Suitable candidates
- Age 40 and above
- High hyperopia (+3D and above) or high myopia not suited for LASIK/ICL
- Early presbyopia — difficulty reading close-up
- Patients seeking to reduce dependence on glasses and avoid future cataract surgery
- Suitable for multifocal, EDOF, or trifocal IOLs
